Niece Brittany and her Scotty got married in May, (Jeez Katie, where ya been? Having a summer that made me want to punch a kitten, but back to cookies) and since no one in my family is allowed to have a joyful life event without my cookies (like it even takes any arm twisting tho) i made her some lovely wedding favors.
Her decor was reminiscent of a lady's vanity table--flowers, feminine fabrics, a sprinkling of sparkles and gems like casually placed jewelry, gem studded picture frames with the couple in cute moments.
All that was missing was a make-up compact. I tried making the cookies look something like that, and a bit like a miniature throw pillow, or the lid to a porcelain candy dish. Or the hardcover of an old romance novel. Or a box of chocolate. The back of a hand mirror... So many ideas.
The final product was tone-on-tone pink or green airbrushed stencils, with a brush of pearl dust, and either a fleur-de-lis, a monogram, or a tiny ensemble of pearl dragees and molded fondant flowers and gems. I even managed to match the pink and green really really close to the bridesmaid dresses.
But even lovelier was the bride... Wedding day highlights included veil vs wind humor, footage of my kiddo line dancing, and mother-of-bride Libby tearing up during the father daughter dance with Brit and step (up) dad, my brother John. It was a really sweet day; kisses and well wishes for you two!
Upcoming: i did make cookies this summer (and punched no actual kittens, nor would i, c'mon) and i'll get 'em posted in between my chores this week, as my "adulting" is finally getting some traction (saving all those poor kittens from my frustration) so hang tight, cookies are coming, have a fabulous week!

spring pretties
A recent
Sunday found the family and I at the in-laws celebrating 3 occasions at
once—the co-birthday party of nephew Andrew and niece Grace (that Sunday being
about the midpoint between their birthdays) and the 45th wedding
anniversary of Jeff’s Ps, Bobbi and Wayne.
Andrew picked blue, Grace picked teal, and I made airbrushed lizards and
butterflies for the kids. For the happy
couple, I made blossoms in their wedding colors, peach and white. I added a few in coral for fun, and some
yellow sugar “pollen” for sparkle. Happy
birthday/birthday/anniversary to you, may there be many more years!
The lizard
to the right has a smooshy tail, because it was humid. Commercial kitchens, which I intend to
utilize more, are more climate controlled than my home, where I bake for my
family. I will be more into the business
of selling cookies for real—licensed, insured, business-carded, advertised,
vending to your local businesses, teaching(?), and stocking your parties with
awesome treats—in the coming weeks. So
tell your friends! (striking a superhero stance)
These hearts
were to welcome a baby girl. I have no
other details, but “welcome!” to the little one. The little-kid-like scribble flowers were a
similar technique to the purple flowers on…
…these cakes,
for a bridal shower in Milwaukee.
Cousin-in-law Kati ordered them, and took delivery of them after I
elected to take care of 2 tasks at once: to get the cookies delivered to her,
and to give myself 2 hours off. I
accomplished this by driving to Milwaukee.
I love and miss driving—all I do in the suburbs is short trips to the
same places. Driving on 94 through that
rolling, half-green (it was march), nowhere of space between Chicagoland and
when you start seeing outlet malls after the WI border, is like driving across
the steppes of Russia, dotted with business parks and RV dealerships and the
like. I imagined that I wasn’t headed
for a Starbucks at a busy intersection, but a hut in Ulaanbaatar. But Starbucks it was, and we all had
somewhere to be, so we agreed to get a real family gathering going at some
point. And then I was on my way east
across Russia again.
Finally,
here are some bits o’beach I did for my kiddo’s school’s Daddy-Daughter dance,
the theme of which was “under the sea.”
Fondant shells and pearl dragees, and 3 kinds of sand colored sugar made
little seaside circles sparkle.
Thanks for stopping by; coming soon,
Shakespeare…

what you've been missing
There is so much I've done, and so little I've posted for you. Here's a speed round, and a heap of apologies for keeping you waiting:
Prettiest first, these were from a bridal show last summer.
Also from last summer, ice cream...
...and patriotic pinwheel stars.
a Minion birthday...
...and a Scooby-Doo birthday (H is for Hannah).
my sister-in-law, Kristi's birthday
this poor little guy I found on my phone from late 2013!
Battle of the Books at the library. (b.o.b for apples, eh?)
for the kiddo's Halloween fun fair at school
more Halloween fun, with airbrushing and plastic bugs
and a Clifford the Big Red Dog themed "Paws to Read" event at the library. Those bone sprinkles did double duty in graveyard pudding dirt cups for Halloween.
Not far behind, I've got last summer's Fringe Fest where yours truly was the only food artist. And coming up, a Midsummer Nights Dream, a vintage clothing show, barista aprons, and everything I've been taking pictures of at work with the work phone--just gotta email the darn pics to my computer and I'll be good to go! I hope you all have a splendid week, and may stay warm! Now I gotta run to OfficeMax...

i do... want cookies...
a bride to be liked some cookies similar to these, and i did my best to recreate their features on a dozen for a shower, and i hope the original artist won't hold it against me, but they were pretty, and my pleasure to make, and i came up with a great new technique for making uniform hearts: sponge food coloring onto the back of a metal mini heart shaped cutter, and stamp the cookie. i did the same with the square outline and got nice even lines and duplicated the shape each time. awesome. Congrats and thank you!
coming up, info on the opening of the ITN "Meet Market," a baby shower, a birthday, and some yummy bugs...

pretty in pink

so closer to the wedding, i offered to make cookie favors for the big day. Dana was totally on board and described her midsummer-night vintage vineyard look, and i played with sketches and ideas and the clues i had from the invitation.
here's part of it...
here's what 12 dozen looks like...
and here's the final product. "silver" curls and pink blossoms, with scrolly lettering on classic 3-tiered wedding cakes, and a final brush of gold pearl dust. so many steps, but once you get to the end of the counter, the other side is dry and ready for another detail. it was cookie after cookie, with that nice zen-like busy feeling. (it ain't work if you like doing it!)
Jeff's Aunt Dahlas helped with the shipping once i got them baked. humid late August is the worst time for waiting for icing to dry, so i was nervous that even Dahlas's painstaking saran-wrapping and double boxing, or however she did it, couldn't keep them from squishing, but in the end they made it from IL to CA in perfect condition. (whew! thanks AD!) Dana bagged them and added ribbon and a personalized label, and had one at each place setting. Congrats to Dana and Josh; many more sweet and sparkly memories for you!

Jamie's dresses
this is my favorite kind of order--one that starts with "oooh! you should call katie!" long story short, there have been parties this year featuring my cookies. one guest, former coworker Mary Jo, passed my website along to her daughter Jamie who wanted a fun way to surprise her friends with the big question.
she wanted to leave it up to me, citing a creativity shortage on her part, but i said how about a color, or a picture you like, and she sent back one of pastel dresses hanging side by side, and a preference for blue. so i sent back this sketch.
i traced the dress cutter twice, and the mini bell twice for the dress combo, and showed 2 choices for the text. the two have the same motif with the question marks and hangers. once i got a thumbs up from Jamie, i had the big idea to try meringue powder.
my mother and i have been using the same icing recipe since at least the mid 80s. it involves egg whites, and we've never had one complaint about it. raves and requests yes, but not a peep about egg-related dissatisfaction. that said, our plan, once these cookies were done, was to drive them to Mary Jo, who will mail them out to Jamie's friends, as Jamie is in AZ and her friends are all over, like MN. i wasn't exactly worried for the cookies making these journeys, and i mused at those little million-to-one disasters that only happen to your package on the leaky truck, or in the hot weather, and i thought, why not try an alternate to egg whites, because one day we'll need to. this order has intricate piping, travelling, and the deadline was kinda soft, so if i hated it, i could start over. it seemed a good time to dabble.
it took some getting used to. it was a lot thicker, it dried with a glossier finish, and the cookie remained firmer. plus it didn't have that not-quite-dry, not-quite-dense, airiness from whipped egg whites. the meringue powder provided the elasticity, but not the slight fluff. the end result was a little more taffeta than organza, but still pretty with pearl dragees, pearl dust, and opal sugar. Jamie said they were a hit and all 4 ladies said yes. congrats! and thanks Jamie and Mary Jo for a fun order.
i look forward to a few valentines, marriage proposals, etc. it's such a fun way to pass a message. my favorite kind of art has always been the kind that translates and idea. when i was little i cut out snowflakes and papered the windows in wintertime. the view out the window wasn't enough, it had to be a perpetual flurry. in high school i didn't feel compelled to write a script or act it, but i thought make-up and model building were awesome--as important as the acting or writing, it was the visuals that got you there. Jamie could have sent some blank chocolates and a card, but here's the iconic image of the bridesmaid's duty, "The Dresses," all bright and edible and cheerful. there's that moment when your eyes stop seeing icing on a cookie and they see the picture. like when the paper snowflakes in the window become the weather outside. it's a neat thing to conjure up in people. and then they get to eat it! win-win!
ladies, i hoped you enjoyed your surprise, and to all, stay tuned for angels, stars, trees, more stars, snow, and a metagingerbread man.

Corby (heart) Melisa, part 2
i couldn't resist making a cookie that played on the happy couple's now-shared name, West. i did these in the same colors as the bridal shower cookies, also with pre-piped letters.
i got this fabulous red color by pre-piping the heart in the same lavender icing, but when dry i brushed on red pearl dust.

the heart and gift box cookies for the shower totaled 4 dozen, but i made just 2 of these to tie onto the shower gift--the bride said they were her favorite. congrats again!
coming soon, more love, more gold, and my favorite flower gets a comic-book moment...

Corby (heart) Melisa
Then my sister-in-law Kristi's best friend Melisa's mom Barb called and asked if i could make cookies for Melisa's bridal shower. sketches were sketched, and the final pick was purple hearts with pre-piped ivory initials, and gift boxes with toothpick-dragged hearts and purple bows.

pearl dust was brushed on both for that sparkly romantic look. and what did i get the bride? ...cookie cutters. :)

katie + jeff

i married my sweety jeff, and to commemorate the event i made about 220 cookies! each favor bag had one of each cookie with an autumn faux sprig. the cookies had a layer of pearl dust (by wilton) and turned one sugar-cookie-skeptic into a believer.
